Tax Form Assistance
AARP is again
providing assistance in filling out tax forms at the Jonesborough and
Gray Libraries. The program begins in February. The AARP
assistance is for taxpayers with a fairly simple return so if you have a
lot of itemizations and complicated finances this program is not for
you.
In Jonesborough the
preparers will be there on each Saturday and Monday that the library is
open until April 14. In Jonesborough, you must come by the library
to make an appointment and to pick up the form you need to fill in
before your appointment.
The program will begin at
the Gray Library on Wednesdays beginning February 1. To make an
appointment in Gray, call 477-1550 or visit the library. If you call to
make your appointment in Gray you will still have to go to the library
to pick up the forms to have them filled out before your appointment
date.
If you are a do it yourself kind of filer there are two
ways we can offer help.
Lots of folks come to the library to use our public
access computers to file their own tax returns online. There are
several different websites that are available for this service. Some
hints about this though: Not all of these sites are free and some of
them don’t tell you that there is a charge until after you’ve
finished your return that there is a fee to pay by a credit card.
You’ll need to have a personal e-mail address set up
before you start preparing your taxes. Don’t forget to bring all the
papers you’ll need to complete the forms, W-2s for everyone on the tax
return, Social Security numbers, etc.
The best hint though is to get the appropriate paper form
and fill it out with your basic information – even if you don’t do the
calculations – before you come into the library. This will make filing
much easier and faster.
Remember that library computers are available in one hour
increments and that if there is a waiting list for the workstation you
may not be able to get right back on the computer. Therefore you’ll
need to choose a site that allows you to save your work and return to it
later. It is also better to come to the library in off-peak use times
like 10:00 a.m. until noon, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., and when the library is
open in the evening after around 5:30 p.m.
We have tax forms available for you in the libraries.
The more common forms – 1040, 1040A, and others, – with their
instructions are on hand in printed form. Forms that aren’t in the
library are available online and the library staff is there to assist
you in locating them through the IRS web site.
Tuesday Night @ the Movies
Come to the
Jonesborough Library on Tuesday, February 7 at 5:30 p.m. and enjoy a
vicarious visit to the magical Scottish village that appears only once
every 100 years.
Gene Kelly and Van Johnson, two
New Yorkers on a hunting vacation, stumble into the village. But what
Tommy (Kelly) actually bags is the heart of bonny Scottish lass, Fiona,
played by Cyd Charisse. There is a catch: if Tommy stays, he gives up
everything including his fiancé back home; if Fiona leaves, Brigadoon
will vanish into the highland mist, never to be seen again.
This Lerner-Lowe musical is
directed by Vincente Minnelli. As Kelly and Charisse dance they weave a
magic all their own and make you wish you could be there in the
“Heather on the Hill.”
The presentation of our movie
is sponsored by the Friends of the Washington County Library and is free
and open to the public.
Campbell’s Labels for
Education
The Washington County Libraries are also
participating in the Campbell's
Labels for Education program. If you collect the labels from your
Campbell’s products like their soups, or related
brands that participate like Pop-Secret, V8 Soup, Bic, etc., and do not
have a place to donate them please consider us. They offer lots of
products we can use in our children’s program like arts supplies,
display pieces, and program supplies.
